“Well, I’d like to say that BAM is extremely old but always new.” Says Pedro J Torres, a member of BAM’s board of trustees. Mr. Pedro J. Torres continues saying, “It’s pretty amazing because, how many institutions can survive for 150 years?”

“It opened in 1861 during the American Civil War.  The institution survived fire, flood, the great depression, and here it stands today as a thrilling and diverse performing arts center that showcase work from all over the world.” Says Pedro J Torres.

Torres continues, ‘This is a place that is an outer borough from the perceived citadel of art and culture being the borough of Manhattan.  Here you can take a lot of risks to demonstrate to the rest of the boroughs that if you want exciting and compelling entertainment, you want to find your way to Brooklyn. “

Pedro J Torres is excited about the upcoming programs. For the next 16 months, BAM will celebrate is sesquicentennial with a lineup of programs, performances, and events that are synonymous with the history of this place.
